This post is to profile my 4 x great-grandparents, Jacob and Eleanor Beer. Most of this is old research that has been sitting in my notes, so the writing style today is of the Dragnet “just the facts” format – at least that how it feels to me. I have to give another shout out to my friends at the Genealogy Specialists message board. This is a follow on of the thread / post about Richard Treleaven and Ann Bryant, with special kudos to members AnnB (Ann), Sis (Anne), Jellylegs (Annie), Mollymay (Sue), and Archie’s Mum (Sue).

Surnames: Beer, Bridgeman, Bryant, Couzens, Hill, Maddick, Parnell, Rundle, Tallack, Treleaven, Winlow.  Places:  East Stonehouse, Devon; Lanlivery, Cornwall; Lanlivet, Cornwall; Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada; Morice Town, Devon; Plymouth, Devon; Portsmouth, Hampshire; Rame-by-Plymouth, Cornwall; Tywardreath, Cornwall;

Jacob Beer was born in July, 1755 at Tywardreath, Cornwall, England. His parents were Philip Beer (1719-1782) and Mary Tallack (b. 1723). He was the third of seven children, five boys and two girls, all born in Tywardreath.

Eleanor Treleaven was born July 1754, the eldest of five children christened at Lanlivet, Cornwall, England. Her parents were Thomas Treleaven (1721-1795) and Mary Bridgeman.

On December 26, 1776, Jacob Beer married Eleanor Treleaven at St. Brevita’s Church (CoE) in Lanlivery, Cornwall, England, UK. Children of Jacob and Eleanor Beer:

  1. Mary Treleaven Beer b. 1777, Lanlivery, m. 15 Oct-1795 Richard Hill, a fisherman, by Banns at Maker Parish or Reg District. Oct 23, 1796 at Maker, Cornwall, St. Macra church, daughter, Mary Hill was born. On July 12, 1805, Couzens, Edward of HMS Favourite, gunner, 21, b. and Mary-Treleaven Hill, of Portsmouth, w, were married at Portsea. I think I have them with 4 children born in Devonport and Portsea. Mary died in 1861 at Huddlesfield, West Riding, Yorkshire, in the home of son, Edward John Sinclair Couzens.
  2. William Beer b. 1784, Lanlivery. Unfortunately, there are several records in Cornwall and Devon about William Beer, but I cannot definitively tie them to this particular William.
  3. Elizabeth Beer b. 1785 Lanlivery. According to Ancestry.com’s tree, Elizabeth married Winlow and had 8 children, and passed away in 1860 in Devonport. I don’t have a current subscription, so can’t drill down beyond this. I haven’t found records to verify independently.
  4. Jennifer Beer b. 1787, Rame-By-Plymouth, Cornwall m. 1805 Daniel Maddick, a seaman, at St. Andrew, Plymouth, Devon. Together they had six children. In some of the records she is called Jane. Daniel died in October, 1818. Their baby, Mary, is baptised the day after his burial and dies 5 months later. Jennifer married second in 1820 to Samuel Parnell (1795-1870), a mariner, at Alverstock, Hampshire. They had 4 children. Jennifer died in 1857.
  5. Christopher Beer b. 1791, Rame-By-Plymouth, was a Commander in the Royal Navy and received 800 acres in Upper Canada as a pension. He married Mary Trealeaven, his cousin in 1817 at Lanlivery. They and their children were one of the founding families of Metcalfe Twp, in what became Middlesex County, Ontario. Died there 1871. Please see my profile [HERE].

Records:

1795 Will of Thomas Treleaven leaves 2 pounds to his daughter, Eleanor, wife of Jacob Beer.

==============================

Jacob Beer passed away on Dec 5, 1826, residence in Ruzza, Lanlivery Parish, Bodmin district, Cornwall.

==============================

Will proved in 1827 per FMP East Stonehouse, Devon; Eleanor Beer, Exeter Bk 2, pg 349.

==============================

With much guidance and moral support from AnnB and Jellylegs at GenealogySpecialists, I ordered a digital image of the will from the Devon Heritage Centre held at the Southwest Heritage Trust. Here are the high points:

Jacob Beer in Stonehouse Devon (Exeter)
* Requests to be buried at the parish churchyard in Stonehouse, Devon.
* Leaves Eleanor everything including “all my Trading ships or parts or shares of Trading ships.”
* Will dated Nov 12, 1822.
* Witnesses (All relatives of Eleanor near Lanlivery): John Bryant, Chas Rundle and R Treleaven

March 23, 1827, Eleanor signed that all of the estate (less what is held in trust for others, etc.) has a total value under two hundred pounds.

==============================

After reading the will, I found a William Beer in the Port of Dartmouth shipping records at the Devon Heritage Centre, who had part ownership in three sailing sloops at times in the 1820’s and 30’s. I don’t know whether or not this is Jacob and Eleanor’s son.

“I found in the North Devon Journal of the 3rd April 1828 under Plymouth news:  At Morice Town, aged 73, Eleanor, relict of the late Mr Jacob Beer of Cremill Point.”

Conclusion:

Well, this hasn’t been the most eloquent of profiles.  With that I will send the blogging muse and internal editor back to their respective corners to battle another day.  I wish all of you a safe and peaceful holiday season.

Regards,

Barb
